Hams on the Hill and Full of Wind
From Saturday 24 June 2017, until Sunday 25 June 2017, the Coon Valley Amateur Radio Club held its annual Field Day event. This year at the QTH of Mark, K0MJT, just up the hill from Manning. Participating in this year’s event were Mark, K0MJT; Dave, N0NAF; Ron, WB0YCV; and George, KB0HVB. We also saw Les, KA0LZU; Jim, KA0HFR; and…
While we missed Arnie, WA0GUD who usually runs our CW station, we decided to utilize his vertical and setup Dave, N0NAF’s rig on the air for our third transmitter, for a total of three voice stations.
We picked a fun year to operate from a hilltop, as there was plenty of brisk wind to keep us on our toes, downing two of our antennas (just once each), and spooking George, KB0HVB with variable SWR while transmitting on the dancing 40-meter beam.
We were storm-free this year, dealing only with the wind and the unseasonably chilly weather. We had to close the garage doors to try and retain some comfort at some point in the night. We had at least one operator on the air throughout the night.
I’ll try to add more to this story as I remember it.
Here are the only pictures I have of the event. I wish I’d taken many more. Jim, KA0HFR making a contact on Saturday afternoon.
